Drug Uses

Zyrtec is a medicine from the group of the antihistamines which are used to prevent sneezing, runny nose, itching and watering of the eyes, and other allergic symptoms. Zyrtec is indicated for treatment of allergies, hives (urticaria), and other allergic inflammatory conditions.

How Taken

Zyrtec is available as a tablet that is taken orally once a day. This medicine may be used regularly or when the symptoms of an allergy occur. You should strictly follow the instruction in the prescription label and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. You should use Zyrtec exactly as directed. Do not take less or more of the medicine and do not take it more often that your doctor prescribed.

Warnings/Precautions

Before you take Zyrtec you should inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease. Your dosage may have to be adjusted or you may have to be monitored during the treatment. Zyrtec falls into the FDA pregnancy category B which means in is unlikely to be harmful for a fetus. Consult your doctor before using Zyrtec in case you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor before using the medicine if you are breast feeding because Zyrtec passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Patients older than 60 years of age are more likely to develop side effects and their dosage may have to be lowered.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, you should not take an additional tablet to catch up the missed on. You should take the next regular dose. Do not take more tablets than your doctor told you in order to reduce the risk of seizures.

Possible Side Effects

Discontinue the usage of Zyrtec and search for medical help if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives). Other less serious adverse effects may occur. Consult your doctor but do not stop using Zyrtec if you have sleepiness, fatigue, or dizziness; headache; or dry mouth. You may also experience other adverse effects that are not mentioned in this leaflet. Consult your doctor if you experience some other side effects.

Storage

Zyrtec should be stored at a temperature of 20-25°C (68-77°F); fluctuations allowed to 15-30°C (59-86°F).

Overdose

Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. An overdose of Zyrtec is not known very well but may include sleepiness, confusion, and weakness.

More Information

Be cautious when you drive, operate machinery or perform any other dangerous activity because Zyrtec may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid the above-mentioned activities if you experience drowsiness or dizziness. Be cautious with the consummation of alcohol during a treatment with Zyrtec because alcohol may enhance the drowsiness and dizziness caused by the medicine.
