Zyban is a medicine used to stimulate the discontinuation of smoking.

How Taken

Zyban is available as a tablet that is taken orally. The medicine is commonly taken two times a day with or without food. The tablets should be swallowed whole; do not chew, crush or divide them.

Warnings/Precautions

You should not take Zyban if you have used monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the last 14 days. Zyban falls into the FDA pregnancy category B which means in is unlikely to be harmful for a fetus. Consult your doctor before using Zyban in case you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor before using the medicine if you are breast feeding because it is not known if Zyban may harm a nursing infant.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, you should not take an additional tablet to catch up the missed on. You should take the next regular dose. Do not take more tablets than your doctor told you in order to reduce the risk of seizures.

Possible Side Effects

Some patients have experienced hypertension when they used Zyban alone or in combination with nicotine replacement therapy. The most frequent side effects are dry mouth and difficulty sleeping but these reactions are usually mild and disappear within a few weeks. Do not take the medicine before you go to bed in case you experience difficulty sleeping. Clinical studies have shown the following frequent adverse effects: shakiness and skin rash. Discontinue the usage of Zyban and search for medical help if you experience an allergic reaction indicated by a rash, hives, or difficulty in breathing. Inform your doctor immediately if you develop a skin rash, hives, fever, swollen lymph glands, painful sores in the mouth or around the eyes, or swelling of lips or tongue because these effects may be symptoms of a severe reaction. Consult your doctor about all other bothersome side effects.

Storage

Zyban should be stored at a room temperature, away of direct sunlight. Zyban should be kept in a tightly-closed container and away from children.

Overdose

Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. An overdose of Zyban may be indicated by seizures, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, weakness, a fast heartbeat, and heart attack.

More Information

You should avoid alcohol or consume it in moderation during a treatment with Zyban because alcohol may enhance the risk of a seizure. However, if you consume a lot of alcohol, you should consult your doctor before you discontinue its usage because a sudden stoppage may also enhance the risk of a seizure. Be cautious when you drive, operate machinery or perform any other dangerous activity because Zyban may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid the above-mentioned activities if you experience drowsiness or dizziness.
