Xenical is a medicine used by people who want to lose weight and to keep the weight loss. It functions in the intestines it does not allow some of the fat you consume to be assimilated by the body. Then the undigested fat is eliminated in the bowel movements. It is recommended that you use Xenical in combination with a diet with reduced calories. The effects of the medicine for the management of weight continue only while you use it.

How Taken

Xenical is available as capsule that should be taken orally. The medicine is commonly taken three times per day with food. You should take the medicine exactly as directed; do not take more or less capsules and do take it more often than prescribed. Xenical should be taken with meals. A daily intake of fat (30% of all calories), carbohydrates and protein should be regularly separated in three main meals.

Warnings/Precautions

Before taking Xenical you should consult your doctor if you have a chronic malabsorption syndrome or gallbladder problems. If you suffer from any of the above-mentioned conditions, you may not been able to use Xenical. Also, inform your doctor if you have kidney stones, have diabetes, have anorexia or bulimia, take any other weight-loss medicine, or take cyclosporine. If you suffer from any of the above-mentioned conditions, you may not been able to use Xenical or your dosage may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored during the treatment. Consult your doctor before using Xenical in case you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor before using the medicine if you are breast feeding because it is not known if Xenical passes into breast milk.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, continue taking Xenical at the next scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to make up the missed one. An additional dose will be of no help.

Possible Side Effects

Discontinue the usage of Xenical and search for medical help if you experience a rare allergic reaction including shortness of breath; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives. Other less serious adverse effects may occur. Consult your doctor but do not stop using Xenical if you have oily spotting, gas with discharge, an urgent need to go to the bathroom, oily or fatty stools, an oily discharge, an increased number of bowel movements, an inability to control bowel movements, or orange or brown colored oil in your stool. These bowel changes are a natural effect of the fat blocking and show that Xenical is functioning. They usually occur in the beginning of the treatment and especially after meals that contain higher amounts of fat. These changes are usually temporary and disappear during the treatment and if you follow the recommended diet of meals which contain 30% fat. You may also experience other adverse effects that are not mentioned in this leaflet. Consult your doctor if you experience some other side effects.

Storage

Xenical should be stored at a room temperature. Protect the medicine from moisture. Keep it away from children and in a tightly-closed container. You should throw away any outdated medicine.

Overdose

Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. The symptoms of an overdose are not known.

More Information

Xenical may reduce the assimilation of some fat-soluble vitamins by the body. Your doctor may advise you to take a multivitamin containing vitamins D, E, K, and beta-carotene to ensure proper nutrition. You should take the vitamin supplement once a day at least 2 hours before or after a dose of the medicine. Each of your meals should not exceed 30% fat calories while you take Xenical. The daily intake of fat, carbohydrates and protein should be regularly distributed in three main meals. Consult your doctor about a program for a healthy eating.
