Drug Uses

Ultram is a medicine used for relief of moderate to moderately severe pain. It may also be used for a treatment of pain after surgery or caused by medical conditions like cancer or joint pain. Ultram functions as it reduces the perception and response of the brain to pain. The drug also decreased the magnitude of the pain signal which is sent between the nerve cells. Ultram may also be used to for other purposes; talk to your doctor for more information.

How Taken

Ultram is available as a tablet that is taken orally. The common dosage is a tablet every 4-6 hours as needed taken with or without food. You should strictly follow the instructions of the prescription label and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand something. Ultram should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. This medicine may be habit-forming. You should not take larger doses of Ultram; you should not take it more often or for a longer period of time than prescribed by your doctor.

Warnings/Precautions

You should inform your doctor if you have kidney disease; liver disease; or a history of alcohol or drug dependence. If you suffer from any of the above-mentioned conditions, you may not been able to use Ultram or your dosage may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored during the treatment. Ultram falls into the FDA category C which means that it is not clear if is harmful for a fetus. Talk to your doctor before using Ultram in case you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor before taking the medicine if you are breast feeding because it is not clear if Ultram passes into breast milk. Patients older than 75 years of age are more likely to experience adverse reactions from Ultram. Their maximum dosage per day is 300 mg. Children younger than 16 years of age should not used Ultram.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose to catch up the missed one.

Possible Side Effects

The side effects caused by Ultram are not common but they can still occur. The most frequent adverse reactions are in the central nervous system (Migraine, Speech disorders) and gastrointestinal system (Gastrointestinal bleeding, Hepatitis, Stomatitis, Liver failure). Consult your doctor if any of the following symptoms are severe or do not disappear for a longer period of time: dizziness, headache, drowsiness, blurred vision, upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea. Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of these side effects: fast heartbeat, redness, swelling, and itching of the face, numbness or tingling of the hands and feet, difficulty breathing, changes in urination, seizures.

Storage

Ultram should be store at a temperature of 25°C (77°F); fluctuations allowed to 15 - 30°C (59 - 86°F). Keep the medicine in a tightly-closed container.

Overdose

Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. An overdose of Ultram may be indicated by the following symptoms: difficulty breathing; shallow, weak breathing; and seizures.

More Information

Avoid consuming alcohol during a treatment with Ultram because their combined usage may cause liver problems and/ or serious decrease in breathing. Be cautious when you drive, operate machinery or perform any other dangerous activity because Ultram may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid the above-mentioned activities if you experience drowsiness or dizziness. It is recommended that you do not use sleeping pills, tranquilizers, sedatives and antihistamines unless you are monitored by a doctor while using them because these medicines may enhance the drowsiness caused by Ultram.
