Drug Uses

Skelaxin is a muscle relaxant. Skelaxin is used to treat the pain and stiffness of muscle injuries, including strains, sprains and muscle spasms.

How Taken

Skelaxin is available as a tablet and should be taken orally. The common dosage for adults and children older than 12 years of age is two tablets (800 mg) three to four times per day. You may take the medicine with food or immediately after a meal to avoid stomach problems. You should not take more of the medicine, use it more often or for a longer period of time than your doctor prescribed.

Warnings/Precautions

You should not take Skelaxin in case you have acute intermittent porphyria. Inform your doctor if you have a liver disease. Your dosage may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored during the treatment. You should consult your doctor before using Skelaxin in case you are pregnant because it is not clear if the medicine is harmful for a fetus. Also, consult your doctor before taking Skelaxin if you are breast feeding because it is not clear if the medicine passes into breast milk. Skelaxin should not be used by children younger than 12 years of age.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose of Skelaxin, you should take in as soon as you remember but only within 1 hour. Otherwise you should skip the missed dose and continue with the scheduled dosage. Do not take a double dosage of the medicine.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects caused by Skelaxin include nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal upset, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and nervousness or "irritability." You may also experience other side effects like hypersensitivity reactions, characterized by a light rash with or without pruritus; leukopenia; hemolytic anemia; jaundice.

Storage

Skelaxin should be stored at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C). Protect the medicine from moisture and sunlight. Do not keep it in the bathroom.

Overdose

Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. An overdose of Skelaxin may be indicated by severe drowsiness or unconsciousness.

More Information

Be cautious when you drive, operate machinery or perform any other dangerous activity because Skelaxin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid the above-mentioned activities if you experience drowsiness or dizziness. It is recommended that you avoid consummation of alcohol during a treatment with Skelaxin because alcohol may enhance the drowsiness and dizziness caused by the medicine.
