Gris-PEG is a medicine prescribed to treat ringworm infections among which are Athlete's foot, Barber's itch (inflammation of the facial hair follicles), Ringworm of the body, Ringworm of the groin and thigh, Ringworm of the nails, Ringworm of the scalp. This medicine is effective only for some types of fungal infections and you should undertake some tests for identification of the source of infection before you start the treatment.

How Taken

An accurate diagnosis of the infection is very important. The common dosage for adults is 330 mg (a single dosage or divided dosages) per day. The dosage for children is 3.3 mg per pound of body weight every day.

Warnings/Precautions

You should avoid intense natural or artificial sunlight because the usage of Gris-PEG may make you very sensitive to light. Inform your doctor if the develop a condition called lupus erythematosus (a form of rheumatism) or another lupus-like condition. A lupus condition may be indicated by arthritis, red butterfly rash over the nose and cheeks, tiredness, weakness, sensitivity to sunlight, and skin eruptions. Your doctor should perform regular tests including periodic monitoring of kidney function, liver function, and blood cell production in case you are using Gris-PEG for a longer period of time. Gris-PEG is not effective for prevention of fungal infections. This medicine may reduce the effectiveness of contraceptives. It is recommended that you use a second birth control method while using Gris-PEG. Men who have taken Gris-PEG should wait at least 6 months before that have a child. Women should not become pregnant during a therapy with Gris-PEG.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose to catch up the missed one.

Possible Side Effects

The most common adverse effects caused by Gris-PEG are associated with hypersensitivity and include skin rashes, urticaria, erythema, multiform-like drug reactions and very rarely angioneurotic edema. Sometimes a discontinuation of the therapy and counter measures may be requires. Cases of paresthesias of the hands and feet have been reported rarely in patients who have used the medicine for a long period of time. Other side effects may include oral thrush, nausea, vomiting, epigastria distress, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, mental confusion, and impairment of performance of routine activities. You should discontinue the usage of Gris-PEG if you experience granulocytopenia. Serious side effects occur very rare and are associated with excessive dosage or longer treatment, or both.

Storage

Gris-PEG should be stored at a controlled room temperature between 15°-30°C (59°-86°F) in a tightly-closed and light-resistant container.

Overdose

Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. Any medicine that is taken in excess may have dangerous consequences.

More Information

Gris-PEG may enhance the effects caused by alcohol. Your heart may star beating faster and your skin may be flushed if you combine the medicine with alcohol. The combination of Gris-PEG and other medicines may reduce, enhance or alter the effects of the drugs. It is very important to consult your doctor before combining Gris-PEG and the following other medicines: Blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin, Barbiturates such as Phenobarbital, Oral Contraceptives.
