Drug Uses

Diflucan is a medicine used to treat: -Vaginal candidiasis (vaginal yeast infections due to Candida). -Oropharyngeal and esophageal candidiasis. -Cryptococcal meningitis. Diflucan is also used to reduce the incidence of candidiasis in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation who receive cytotoxic chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

How Taken

Diflucan is available as a tablet or liquid and should be taken orally. The medicine is commonly taken once a day. You should strictly follow the instructions on the prescription and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Use Diflucan exactly as instructed. Do not take more tables than prescribed and do not take the medicine more often than instructed. The liquid form of the medicine should be shaken well before usage. Do not discontinue the usage of Diflucan even if you feel better. Do not stop using the medicine without the approval of your doctor.

Warnings/Precautions

Do not take Diflucan in case you are taking cisapride (Propulsid) because the combination of cisapride (Propulsid) and Diflucan may cause very serious heart problems which may even be fatal. Inform your doctor before using Diflucan if you have some other medical conditions and especially kidney disease, or if you taking any other medicine. You may not been able to use Diflucan or your dosage may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored during the treatment. Diflucan falls into the FDA category C which means that it is not clear if it may harm a fetus. Talk to your doctor before using Diflucan in case you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during the treatment with the medicine. Also, consult your doctor before taking Diflucan if you are breast feeding because the medicine passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose to catch up the missed one.

Possible Side Effects

Discontinue the usage of Diflucan and immediately search for medical help in case you experience some of the following serious side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); liver damage (pale stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, or dark urine); or a rash. You may experience some less serious side effects. Consult your doctor but do not stop using Diflucan if you experience nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain; diarrhea; headache; dizziness; fatigue; or itching. You may also experience other adverse effects that are not mentioned in this leaflet. Consult your doctor if you experience some other side effects.

Storage

Diflucan should be stored at a temperature below 86°F (30°C). Do not let the medicine freeze. Diflucan injections in Viaflex Plus plastic containers are available in sodium chloride and dextrose diluents. They are stored at a temperature between 77°F (25°C) and 41°F (5°C). Short exposure at a temperature up to 104°F (40°C) will not affect the medicine. Do not let them freeze.

Overdose

Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. An overdose of Diflucan may be signaled by the following symptoms: confusion, hallucinations, paranoia, decreased movement, decreased breathing, tearing eyes, drooling, urinary incontinence, seizures, and death.

More Information

Avoid using alcohol or reduce its quantities during the treatment with Diflucan. Both alcohol and Diflucan can affect the liver. Be cautious when you drive or perform any other dangerous activities. Diflucan may cause dizziness. Avoid the above-mentioned activities if you experience dizziness.
