Drug Uses

Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant that is indicated for relief of pain and stiffness caused by muscle spasms and discomfort due to strain and sprain.

How Taken

Carisoprodol is taken orally; you may take it with food or milk to avoid stomach problems. The common dosage for adults is a tablet of 350 mg three times a day and at bedtime. Patients younger than 12 years of age should not use Carisoprodol.

Warnings/Precautions

Do not take Carisoprodol in case you suffer from acute intermittent porphyria. Consult your doctor before taking Carisoprodol if you have kidney or liver disease. Your dosage may have to be reduces, or you may have to be monitored during the treatment. Talk to your doctor before taking the medicine if you are pregnant because it is not known if Carisoprodol is harmful to a fetus. Also, consult your doctor before using the medicine if you are breast feeding because it is not clear if Carisoprodol passes into breast milk.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember if this happens within an hour or so. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose of this medicine.

Possible Side Effects

Carisoprodol may cause the following adverse effects: dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, tremor, agitation, irritability, headache, depressive reactions, syncope, and insomnia. Allergic or idiosyncratic reactions may also develop. These side effects usually occur in the period between the first and forth dosage in patience who haven't used the medicine before. The following adverse effects have also been reported during treatment with of Carisoprodol: skin rash, erythema multiforme, pruritus, eosinophilia, and fixed drug eruption with cross reaction to meprobamate. Serious and severe adverse effects include asthmatic episodes, fever, weakness, dizziness, angioneurotic edema, smarting eyes, hypotension, and anaphylactoid shock.

Storage

Carisoprodol should be stored at a controlled room temperature 15°-30°C (59°-86°F) in a tightly closed container.

Overdose

Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. An overdose of Carisoprodol may be signaled by low blood pressure (weakness, fainting, and confusion), decreased breathing, and unconsciousness.

Be cautious when you drive, operate machinery or perform some dangerous activities because Carisoprodol may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid the above-mentioned activities if you experience dizziness or drowsiness.
