Allegra D - Relief of Different Allergy Symptoms

This medication is an antihistamine and decongestant combination which provides relief of seasonal allergy symptoms such as watery or itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, itchy throat, and stuffy nose (nasal congestion)

This medication is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age due to the high amount of pseudoephedrine.

Drug Uses

Allegra-D is used to relieve symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children older than 12 years of age. Among the effectively treated symptoms were sneezing, rhinorrhea, itchy nose/palate/throat, itchy/watery/red eyes, and nasal congestion.

How Taken

The common dose of Allegra-D is one pill twice a day for adult and children older than 12 years of age. Avoid taking the medicine with food. Patients with a decreased renal function should begin with a starting dose of one tablet a day.

Warnings/Precautions

You should not take Allegra-D if you have used monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days or if you have any of the following diseases: asthma or another lung disease; diabetes; thyroid problems; glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye; urinary retention or an enlarged prostate; kidney or liver disease; or heart disease, high blood pressure, or an irregular heartbeat. If you have any of the above-mentioned medical conditions, you may not been able to use Allegra-D or your dosage may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored during the treatment. Allegra-D falls into the FDA category C which means that it is not clear if is harmful for a fetus. Talk to your doctor before using Allegra-D in case you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor before taking the medicine if you are breast feeding because it is not known if Allegra-D passes into breast milk. Children younger than 12 years of age should not use this medicine.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose to catch up the missed one.

Possible Side Effects

Among the possible side effects is nausea, stomach upset, trouble sleeping, headache, or cold symptoms. Inform your doctor if these adverse effects continue or get worse. The following side effects are very unlikely to occur but you should inform your doctor if you experience any of them: dizziness, mental/mood changes, fast heartbeat, fever. Talk you your doctor immediately if you experience any of these very serious but very rare adverse effects: fainting, irregular heartbeat. Keep in mind that you may experience dizziness even if it occurs very rarely, and be cautious because the dizziness may affect your ability to perform dangerous activities like driving. Consult your doctor if you experience some other side effects.

Storage

Allegra-D should be stored at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C). Keep the medicine away from sunlight and moisture.

Overdose

Large doses of Allegra-D may cause giddiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, thirst, tachycardia, precordial pain, palpitations, difficulty in micturition, muscular weakness and tenseness, anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia. You may experience a toxic psychosis with delusions and hallucinations or you may develop cardiac arrhythmias, circulatory collapse, convulsions, coma, and respiratory failure.

More Information

You should be very cautious when you drive, operate machinery or perform dangerous activities. Allegra-D may cause dizziness and it is recommended that you avoid the above-mentioned activities if you experience dizziness. You should not take Allegra-D soon after or before you take antacids which contain aluminum or magnesium because these ingredients may reduce the function of Allegra-D.
